Laboratory Services and Screenings for Common Illnesses
Generations Family Practice offers high-quality laboratory services onsite including professional phlebotomy through a partnership with Quest Diagnostics. Quest will bill your insurance directly for their services and you may get a bill that is separate from your GFP bill from Quest. Your laboratory health insurance benefits may be very different from your office visit benefits at GFP. You can learn what costs to expect from your insurance company by calling the customer service number on the back of your insurance card prior to receiving service. Please contact the Quest Billing Department for questions regarding a bill you receive from Quest.
Annual Physicals
At Generations Family Practice, we screen for common diseases by performing fasting blood work prior to each annual physical on adults. The lab tests are:
Lipid Panel (Cholesterol Screening)
CMP (Comprehensive Metabolic Panel)
CBC (Complete Blood Count)
While these tests used to be covered by insurance, it’s more and more common for it to apply to deductible or other patient liability. You may receive a bill from Quest for your screening tests, even if the tests are run as part of your annual preventive exam and filed to your insurance with preventive codes.
Preferred Lab
Another insurance problem is the preferred laboratory network. Many insurers will provide better benefits at their preferred laboratory. You can learn what lab to use by calling the customer service number on the back of your insurance card prior to receiving service. Quest is preferred by almost all insurers. We will gladly print an order for you to take to a lab draw center that your insurance company prefers, but most patients will be able to use Quest services onsite.
What labs are free screenings under the Affordable Care Act?
Great question! Only screenings with an A or B rating from the United States Preventive Services Task Force (USPST) are required to be covered at 100% by your insurance under the Affordable Care Act. Unfortunately, our annual physical labs are no longer required to be covered by your insurance and often times will result in a small patient balance.
Will my labs be covered by my insurance?
It’s hard to say these days. In some cases, your labs will be paid in full as a preventive screening. Some insurers will apply copay, coinsurance, or deductible. The only way to know is to call the customer service on the back of your insurance card and ask about coverage for labs like CBC and Lipids when performed as a preventive screening.
What are my options if I have insurance that doesn’t work with Quest?
We are more than happy to print an order for you to present at a local Quest draw center. We will receive your results when your labs are complete and your care will not be interrupted.
What labs do you run as part of an annual physical?
For years, Generations Family Practice has run a fasting lab panel that includes metabolic, lipid, and complete blood count testing prior to each adult wellness exam. Preventive benefits for these labs were good until recently. Unfortunately, insurers are now asking patients to bear more of these screening costs.
Why do you run these labs during a physical?
We want you to be as healthy as you can be. Many conditions go undetected as patients don’t often feel the symptoms until the disease has progressed significantly. We identify several cases of Diabetes and other disorders each month through our screenings and feel it is our duty to protect our patients from poor health outcomes.
