Immunization Policy at Generations
In response to increasing questions and requests to differ from recommended guidelines concerning immunization schedules, Generations Family Practice has an updated vaccine policy which we will use to guide us in the area of vaccines. This policy is available in our office as well.
Generations Family Practice is firmly committed to protecting the health of your children and your family. Thus, we require all of our patients to be vaccinated. We believe in the effectiveness and safety of vaccines, and that all children and adults should receive the recommended vaccines according to the schedule published by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP). However, should you have doubts, we encourage you to discuss these with your healthcare provider. If you should refuse to vaccinate your child, we will ask you to find another healthcare provider who shares your views.
We recommend our patients to be vaccinated according to the CDC schedule which is updated annually and approved by the AAP and the AAFP (American Academy of Family Physicians.)
Explanation of Generations Family Practice Vaccine Policy
Vaccinating children and adults is one of the most important health-promoting interventions we perform as healthcare providers, and you can perform as parents/caregivers. The recommended vaccines and their schedule given are the results of years and years of scientific study and data gathering on millions of children by thousands of our brightest scientists and physicians.
We advise you to vaccinate your child because we truly care about you, your family, and our community. No one should have to suffer from a preventable, life-threatening illness.
A thorough review of available literature, evidence, and current studies indicates that vaccines do not cause autism or other developmental disabilities. Thimerosal, a preservative that has been in vaccines for decades and remains in some vaccines, does not cause autism or other developmental disabilities.
Generations Family Practice has carefully reviewed our approach to vaccinations in our practice.
We want the greatest health and safety for both the children and adults we care for in our practice and in our community.
With these issues in mind, the following reflects our new vaccine policy:
- We believe in the effectiveness of vaccines to prevent serious illness and to save lives.
- We believe in the safety of vaccines.
- We believe that children and young adults should receive all of the recommended vaccines according to the schedule published by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the American Academy of Pediatrics.
- We believe, based on all available literature, evidence, and current studies, that vaccines do not cause autism or other developmental disabilities. We believe that thimerosal, a preservative that has been in vaccines for decades and remains in some vaccines, does not cause autism or other developmental disabilities.
- We believe that much of the protection of vaccines comes from herd immunity. Most vaccines produce immunity in 90-95% of children. The remaining 5-10% who do not produce immunity from the vaccines are protected from herd immunity, meaning that a highly vaccinated population limits the spread of most infections. As more people choose not to vaccinate, herd immunity is eroded, leaving that 5 – 10 % at risk.
We recognize that there has always been and will likely always be controversy surrounding vaccinations. The vaccine campaign is truly a victim of its success. It is because vaccines are so effective at preventing illness that we are even discussing whether or not they should be given. Because of vaccines, many have never seen a child with Hemophilus influenza, tetanus, whooping cough (pertussis), bacterial meningitis, or even chickenpox, or have known a friend or family member whose child died of one of these diseases. Such success can make us complacent about vaccinating. But such an attitude, if it becomes widespread, can only lead to tragic results.
Over the past several years, many people in Europe have chosen not to vaccinate their children with the MMR vaccine after the publication of an unfounded suspicion (later retracted) that the vaccine caused autism. As a result of under-immunization, there have been outbreaks of measles and several deaths from complications of measles in Europe over the past several years. These outbreaks are now becoming more common here in the United States with more frequency and involving more diseases. In Wake County, we have seen mumps, pertussis, and even a case of measles as the number of unvaccinated children increases.
Our policy is written to emphasize the importance of vaccinations as well as to protect all our staff and patients. We recognize that the choice may be a very emotional one for some parents. We will do everything we can to assure you that vaccinating according to the recommended schedule is the right thing to do. However, should you have doubts, please discuss these with your healthcare provider. Because we are committed to protecting the health of your children through vaccination, we require all of our patients to be vaccinated. If you refuse to vaccinate your child despite all our efforts, we will ask you to find another healthcare provider who shares your views. We do not keep a list of such providers, nor would we recommend any such physician. Please recognize that by not vaccinating, you are putting your child at unnecessary risk for life-threatening illness disability, and even death. As medical professionals, we feel very strongly that vaccinating your child on schedule with currently available vaccines is the right thing to do to protect all children and adults. Thank you for taking the time to read this policy. Please feel free to discuss any questions or concerns you may have about vaccines with any one of us.
