Schedule Your Child’s Back to School Physical Now

Schedule Your Child’s Back to School Physical Now

A back to school physical might be the last thing on your mind in July, but now is the time to make an appointment — before we book up! As you give us a call, you’re probably thinking, “Gosh why do we need to do these physicals each year anyway?”

Why Does My Child Need a Back to School Physical?

First, we give children their required vaccines during a physical, and your school will require proof before enrollment each year. While children don’t need shots each time, there are plenty of great reasons to come in for a school physical. Children grow and change drastically each year. An annual visit is a chance for us to:

The physical is also a chance for you, the parents, to share concerns or challenges you’re facing, whether you’re struggling to make ends meet and worry about your child’s nutrition or are worried your child may need special education or extra help in some areas.

How to Prepare for Your Child’s Physical

Let your child know what expect: a doctor will check their eyes, nose, ears, and weight. Inform him or her about any expected shots. At the appointment, let us know any changes in the family medical history, any changes in your child’s health, a list of over-the-counter medications your child takes (including vitamins).

A Sports Physical

Some sports and schools require sports physicals, while others don’t. However, the American Academy of Pediatrics encourages such exams, which are a chance to talk about injuries, nutrition, training, and exercise. Overuse and overtraining cause many injuries and problems in children, so it’s essential for us to watch for the signs and ask your child about his/her sports programs. Learn more about sports physicals.
